History of the Banjo in Traditional Irish Music –
Mick Moloney
Mick Moloney combines the careers of folklorist, arts presenter and advocate, professional
musician, and radio and television personality. Born in Limerick, he was an important figure on the Dublin
folk-song revival in the 1960s. In the early 1970s he gained fame in the United States as a member of Irish
group The Johnstons and has since performed and recorded with a variety of groups and individuals, including Eugene O'Donnell,
Seamus Egan, Marie and Martin Reilly, and the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. In 1999 he was awarded the National Heritage
Award from the National Endowment for the Arts — the highest official honor a traditional artist can receive in the
United States. In this lecture Mick will perform and explore the history of the banjo in Irish music since
its introduction to Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century.

The Origins and Music of the Irish Union/Uilleann
Pipes – Jerry O’Sullivan
The
Union Pipes, more popularly known in modern times as the Uilleann Pipes, are a unique musical instrument with a sweetness,
expressiveness and complexity unparalled in the bagpipe world. Jerry O'Sullivan has been a practitioner
of this instrument since 1976, although he began listening to recordings of uillean piping since early childhood.
Jerry is an accomplished performer, recording artist, teacher, and scholar of this instrument. Some
of Jerry's credits include working with Hollywood composer John Williams, The Eagles Don Henley, and Dolly Parton,
amongst other artists. In addition to recording three solo albums, Jerry has also been a guest musician
on over 100 other recordings and was a featured soloist on Paul Winter's Grammy-winning album, A Celtic Solstice.
See www.jerryosullivan.com for more biographical information about Jerry. With live
performance, this evening's lecture will explore the fascinating origins of this instrument and its evolution through
the 18th through 20th centuries. The influence and the music of the seminal uillean
piping quadumvirate of the 20th century (Patrick J. Touhey, Leo Rowsome, Seamus Ennis, and Willie Clancy) will
be part of the presentation, as well.
