2017 Concert Schedule
Sat. 3/25 Gourley, Abarta & Marshall House Concert
Boston based Uilleann piper Joey Abarta and fiddler Nathan Gourley are two of America’s great young trad musicians, who have been playing music together daily since 2013. Their debut duo album, Copley Street, featuring Owen Marshall on Greek bouzouki, has an undeniable chemistry and demonstrates a nuanced understanding of each the other's playing. Their music includes offbeat settings of well-known tunes and beautiful pieces that seem to languish in obscurity. "Copley Street" is a wonderful album from two stunning young players that adds to Boston’s rich history of traditional Irish music.
Originally from Southern California but now based in Boston, Joey is a talented multi-instrumentalist on the tin whistle and uilleann pipes. He earned All-Ireland honors on the pipes in 2009 and in 2014 became the first American piper to take first prize at the Oireachtas. Joey is a renown instructor in Comhaltas's Boston Music School and last year received a teaching grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. He has toured with Mick Moloney’s Green Fields of America, performed with members of The Yanks, and performs frequently as a solo musician.
A former member of Chulrua, the Doon Ceili Band, the Two Tap Trio, and the Máirtín de Cógáin Project, Nathan Gourley started playing music at age five. While living in Minnesota he had the opportunity to collaborate with such renowned players as Paddy O’Brien of Chulrua, Daithi Sproule of Altan, Brian Miller of Bua, and Norah Rendell of The Outside Track. Now a resident of Boston, Nathan has recently released 'Life Is All Checkered' with Laura Feddersen and 'The Truckley Howl' with John Blake and Mairead Hurley.
Owen Marshall has performed and recorded with many of traditional music’s top performers including Aoife Clancy, Liz Carroll, Darol Anger, John Doyle, Andrea Beaton, Jerry Holland, Ari & Mia Friedman, his own traditional Irish trio “The Press Gang” and the acoustic trio “Haas, Walsh and Marshall”. His music has appeared on NPR’s “Thistle and Shamrock,” BBC television, and the back of his left elbow has appeared on MTV. In addition to being a respected performer, Owen is in demand at music camps throughout New England and the U.S., where he shares his approach to accompanying traditional music.
Fri 4/7 Mairtin O’Connor Trio NEW VENUE Seabury Center Westport, CT
The Máirtín O’Connor Trio
Virtuoso accordion player Máirtín O’Connor, Ireland's 2015 Traditional Musician of the Year, brings his remarkable trio to the U.S. in the Spring of 2017. Back by popular demand, they’ll reprise their wildly successful East Coast tour of 2015, the first time the trio toured here on their own.
Máirtín O’Connor is one of the most respected and best loved musicians ever to emerge from Ireland. Recognized as a figurehead of the tradition, he has quite simply gone where no Irish accordion player has gone before. Máirtín was a main musical force in Riverdance and a member of the legendary Irish group De Danann. His unique playing has graced projects by many leading Irish artists as well as international stars Rod Stewart, Mark Knopfler, and Elvis Costello.
The Máirtín O’Connor Trio is one of his prized projects. The three members have each built reputations as masters with astounding skill, diversity and virtuosity. Together they produce a vibrant and charged experience that redefines one’s concept of Irish music. They draw on elements of swing, bluegrass, and more, with sophisticated arrangements and subtle musicianship.
Máirtín’s fluid accordion style and wide musical influences blend perfectly with the fiddle playing of Cathal Hayden, an All-Ireland champion and member of Four Men and a Dog. Cathal is also a dynamic banjo player and just released his CD “Hooked On Banjo” to universal applause and a sold-out NYC launch. Rising young guitarist Patrick Doocey will be subbing for the trio’s third member, Séamie O’Dowd, on this tour. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts and raised in County Mayo, Patrick is an All-Ireland multi-instrumentalist who has toured with such Irish stars as Lunasa and Sharon Shannon.
The Máirtín O’Connor Trio first toured the US for three seasons (2011-2014) as members of Martin Hayes's Masters of Tradition. The three drew standing ovations for their dazzling sets in venues from New York’s Lincoln Center to UCLA's Royce Hall. They have toured extensively through Ireland, Great Britain, Europe, and more recently in Australia and New Zealand. They've also toured with Irish singing legend Christy Moore and Australian guitar great Tommy Emmanuel. In 2009 the trio released the much anticipated album ‘Crossroads,' which The Irish Times raved "bottle[s] the essence of their dynamic live shows,” and in 2012 the powerful follow-up recording ‘Going Places.’
The 2017 US tour is made possible in part by the generous support of Culture Ireland.
Galway native Máirtín O’Connor began playing at age nine, inspired by his paternal grandparents who both played accordion. He was a main musical force with Riverdance, De Dannan, Boys of The Lough, Midnight Well, Skylark, and his trio has recently been accompanying the great Irish singer Christy Moore. Máirtín has graced projects by such artists as Mark Knopfler, Elvis Costello, Rod Stewart, and The Waterboys' "Fisherman's Blues" album. His playing can be heard on the soundtracks of "Dancing at Lughnasa," "Some Mother’s Son," and "Twelfth Night." A prolific writer of new material, his tunes can be heard on the recordings of many artists and at sessions throughout the world. In February 2015, Máirtín was named Musician of the Year in Ireland's prestigious TG4 Gradam Ceoil (Traditional Music Awards). The annual awards honor the extraordinary talent and commitment to traditional music that exists among Irish musicians.
Cathal Hayden is an All-Ireland Champion on both fiddle and banjo. A native of County Tyrone, from an area immersed in traditional music, Cathal was born into a deep musical background. His father played the banjo and fiddle, and his mother was a pianist, while both grandfathers were fiddle players. Cathal is a member of the group Four Men and a Dog whose first album, Barking Mad, won UK magazine Folk Roots best new album award in 1991 (the first Irish band to do so). He was also a member of Arcady and worked with many musicians including Arty McGlynn and Paddy Keenan, with many albums and session credits to his name. Cathal's groundbreaking individual style incorporates swing, rock, and bluegrass. His brand-new CD “Hooked on Banjo” has received wide fan and critical applause. The Irish Times writes the album is “is a force to be reckoned with...a very fine snapshot of a musician in full swing.”
Patrick Doocey (U.S. Tour 2017)
An All-Ireland winning multi-instrumentalist, Patrick is quickly becoming one of the most in demand accompanists on the Irish music scene today. Predominately self-taught on guitar, Patrick’s exciting style on both nylon and steel string guitar combines influences from many genres. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts and having lived in Foxford, County Mayo, Patrick now resides in New York City. His talents have brought him all over Europe, Asia, America and Africa. His musical journey so far has seen him perform with artists such as Sharon Shannon, Liz Carroll, Lunasa, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Teada, Buille, Cathal Hayden, Karan Casey and Sean Keane.
